Seven the Play - Opening on 23 February with special guest Women of the WorldPygmalion Theatre Company presents “SEVEN,” by Seven Award-Winning Playwrights, February 3 – March 11, Black Box Theatre, Rose Wagner Center for the Performing Arts.Seven” is a soul-stirring documentary play in which seven renowned playwrights tell the true stories of seven women from seven different countries who have surmounted tremendous obstacles to combat trafficking, violence, and other human-rights abuses. Award-winning women playwrights Paula Cizmar, Catherine Filloux, Gail Kriegel, Carol K. Mack, Ruth Margraff, Anna Deveare-Smith, and Susan Yankowitz interviewed bold women's rights activists from Afghanistan, Cambodia, Guatemala, Nigeria, Northern Ireland, Pakistan, and Russia—and give voice to their experiences through this groundbreaking piece of theatre.[gn_quote style="1"]“The play powerfully portrays the transformative way that seven courageous women have changed their societies for the better – from peace-building, to fighting corruption, to combating violence against women.” US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton[/gn_quote]Mukhtar Mai of Pakistan is one of these women. She was gang-raped in retaliation for her brother’s “crime” of holding hands with a woman from a higher caste. Mukhtar’s audacity in pressing charges against her attackers, rather than committing suicide, is only part of her story. Marina Pisklakova-Parker started a one-woman domestic violence hotline in Russia, a country that had no laws against domestic violence or resources for its victims, which include almost 75% of married Russian women. The playwrights have brilliantly interwoven the common threads of these seven compelling stories, revealing a pattern of hope, determination, and the power of one woman to make a difference.[gn_quote style="1"]"Riveting, explosive, and inspiring drama, starkly emotive, reaffirm[s] the belief that one person could indeed make a difference." -Huffington Post. [/gn_quote]“Seven” is directed by Lane Richins, and features Nova Calverly Chase, Tamara Johnson-Howell, Kerry Lee, Toni Lugo, Teresa Sanderson, Angela Trusty, and Betsy West. All shows at the Rose Wagner Center for the Arts - 138 W.
