Job Description

Women of the World is looking for a part-time, certified English instructor to teach its Intensive English course, which is held Monday-Thursday, 9:00-12:00pm in 8 week sessions. The job will include teaching as well as creating curriculum for both the intensive course and the regular conversation courses led by volunteers. Because competent interpersonal communication in English is a necessity for new Americans, WoW’s English program is focused on practical English acquisition and emphasizes conversation as its primary goal and method.

To do this, the curriculum must be tailored to the specific needs of the students, emphasizing specific areas of English related to their interests and desires. Course materials will be as authentic as possible, with modifications made only when necessary to make the material accessible to students.

The goal is for students to first learn English that is practical for their everyday lives, then progress towards different areas students specifically plan to pursue i.e. University navigation, fields of study, and specific job vocabulary. At the end of this course students will:

  • Talk about daily life, familiar topics, and personal stories in the present tense. Students will begin to be able to discuss topics related to their roles, activities, and more abstract ideas such as current events and employment in present, past, and future tenses.

  • Students will be able to use vocabulary (with mostly correct pronunciation) related to their interests.

  • Navigate websites and printed resources, as well as complete applications or forms

  • Begin to meet basic writing needs.

  • Sensitivity to the needs of diverse cultural communities

  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality as it relates to handling client information and fill out a confidentiality disclosure.

  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check

  • Bachelors in English, Education, Second Language, Linguistics, or a related field

  • One year of teaching ESL or an equivalent experience.

  • Passion for engaging with students from multicultural backgrounds

  • Masters degree in TESOL, English, Education, Second Language, Linguistics, or a related field.

  • Experience with Arabic, Farsi, French, or other languages.

  • Education and/or work experience regarding PTSD in individuals.

To apply, please send a cover letter and resume to Candice at Applications made me submitted until the position is filled.
